AC Milan new coach Clarence Seedorf has made Manchester United striker Robin van Persie one of his top transfer targets

Both men enjoyed several years as international team-mates for Holland and Seedorf, who succeeded the sacked Massimiliano Allegri this week, wants to embark on an overhaul at the San Siro.

Sat in midtable obscurity in Serie A and 30 points behind leaders Juventus, power brokers at the club have given Seedorf the green light to oversee a transition which will spell the end for several under-achievers and also lead to a number of high-profile signings.

Robin Van Persie has endured an injury-hit spell in his second season at Old Trafford, during which time rumours about a poor working relationship with boss David Moyes have persisted.

A summer bid is more likely than a January offer but if the Red Devils decide to cash in and strengthen other areas of their squad, they are unlikely to recoup the £30million it took to lure him from Arsenal 18 months ago.

The forward will be 31-years-old by the time next campaign starts, and Milan can also point to the fact that last season was one of his few injury-free runs in a career blighted by ankle and muscle ailments.
